Food People Notes & Ideas

Vivian Howard Left Deep Run to Write. The Cooking Followed.

Vivian Howard grew up in Deep Run, North Carolina, pursued writing and restaurant work, returned home to open Chef & the Farmer, and built books and television around the ingredients and food traditions of Eastern North Carolina.

Cover card. Food people. The headline reads: The ignored ingredient carries the deepest local story.

There is a useful reversal buried in Vivian Howard’s career. She went into restaurant kitchens because she wanted to write about food. Then the cooking became the thing that gave her something specific enough to write about.

She grew up in Deep Run, North Carolina, inside the agricultural and food traditions of Eastern North Carolina, and—like plenty of people from small places—she left. Restaurant work and life elsewhere stretched her sense of what professional food could look like.

The return trip is where it gets interesting. Back in the region, she opened Chef & the Farmer in Kinston, and the restaurant’s relationship with local growers and ingredients became the engine for a much larger project: paying close attention to the foods people nearby had long treated as ordinary.

The ingredient got the starring role

Her public television series A Chef’s Life used the restaurant as base camp and kept walking outward—to farmers, home cooks, and regional traditions built on collards, corn, sweet potatoes, field peas, fish. Deep Run Roots did the same work on the page, through history, story, and recipes.

Then she made the system blunt and practical. This Will Make It Taste Good organizes home cooking around “flavor heroes”: high-impact preparations such as a green sauce, deeply caramelized onions, preserves, spiced nuts, or pickled tomatoes, made once and spent across many meals. Chef thinking, adjusted for the reality of a refrigerator on a Wednesday night.

The humility in all this is the part worth copying. The ingredient everybody ignores may be the one carrying the deepest local story.
