What is in it

Thanksgiving is the one meal of the year where the cooking is not the hard part. You have made all of it before. What you have not done is make all of it on the same afternoon, in one oven, with the good dishes already out and somebody’s uncle standing exactly where the drawer opens.

The meal is already in it

Turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, gratin, rolls, mash, gravy, green beans, pie, a board. Fourteen people, one oven, four burners, four o’clock. Change the bird, the guest count, the number of ovens or the hour, and the whole plan moves with you.

What it tells you

  • The bird. Bought weight rather than served weight. A whole turkey puts under half its shop weight on the table, and that is the most common way a Thanksgiving quietly runs short.
  • The list, already written. Every ingredient across the whole menu, by section of the shop, with peel, trim and bone already added back — and four dated trips rather than one, because the refrigerator you fill on Monday is the refrigerator you need empty on Thursday.
  • The board. Something for people to stand around while the bird rests: which cheeses and how much of each, rounded the way a counter sells it, drawn to scale on the board you actually own.
  • Which dishes do not fit. On one oven, several never do. It names them, names the dish that is blocking them, and gives specific ways out with numbers attached — including cooking at the temperature the oven is actually at, and exactly what that does to the time.
  • The rest window. The bird rests thirty-five minutes and does not need the oven. That is the only unbooked hot slot in the entire day, and it is almost always where the dish that fit nowhere else belongs.
  • The refrigerator. It will not fit. It tells you by how much, in square inches, and which shape changes buy the space back — because a stockpot is the worst use of a shelf in the house.
  • The circuit. The countertop oven and the kettle on the same twenty-amp circuit is 3,200 watts against 1,920, and the breaker opens at exactly the wrong moment. It is the most avoidable disaster of the day.
  • Somewhere to put it down. Every finished dish matched to a serving vessel you own, and told plainly when there is nothing left that will hold a carved fourteen-pound bird.
  • The last twenty minutes. How many things are still live when the doorbell goes, and which two to move earlier.
  • What to cut. A named list, in order, for when you are half an hour behind, with what each one gives back. The sides go out at room temperature and nobody notices. The main and the drinks are the only two things a room actually registers.
  • Friday. What comes back, what was never worth keeping, how many containers it takes, and the stock that turns a carcass into the base of two more dinners.

When to buy it

October, and use it twice: once in the planning week to find out what does not fit while there is still time to move something, and once on the day, printed and taped inside a cupboard door. Buying it on the Wednesday night is allowed. It will still work. You will just have fewer options.

What’s free

Start with the Thanksgiving page — the whole day, free, including the clock. The Command Center is what you buy when you want the shopping list, the fridge plan and the run sheet built from your own menu.

The Thanksgiving Clock stays free for the bird’s backwards timeline, and the Oven Traffic Calculator stays free for the menu collision in front of you. The Thanksgiving Command Center carries the whole day: the menu is already loaded, the shopping and cold-space work are joined to the schedule, oven conflicts are resolved across the meal, make-ahead and hold windows are carried forward, and the result becomes a printable run sheet. The free tools answer their questions. This file coordinates Thanksgiving.

One self-contained HTML file. Nothing installs, nothing phones home, and it works with no internet at all.

If you host more than once a year

This is the same engine as The Host’s Operating System, with Thanksgiving already entered. That one is not tied to a holiday, and comes with the Field Manual — thirty-seven printed pages of the same numbers for when your hands are wet and the laptop is in the other room. That is the whole difference, stated plainly rather than manufactured: if Thursday is the only day of the year you cook like this, stay here and have the day already loaded. If it is not, buy that one and load Thanksgiving into it yourself in about ninety seconds.

It keeps the day, and hands it on

Press Save this evening and the whole plan goes into one small file on your own computer. Open it again on Wednesday night and every number comes back. Nothing is stored anywhere you cannot see.

When the plan is set, Copy for the crew sheet sends the runbook to the Crew Sheet, which is included and works in Google Sheets, Excel or Numbers. Put a name against each line and whoever is carving, basting or clearing gets a card with only their own jobs on it: the time, the job, and a ✦ against anything that does not move. A worked example comes with it, filled in by the app itself. If the household runs on Notion or ClickUp instead, Save for Notion or ClickUp writes the same lines to a file either one imports as it is: one task per line, with Who and Done left for you.
